The Rungus tribe, part of the indigenous Kadazan Dusun tribe, are well-known for their longhouses, beautiful beadwork and intricate weaving. Also known as ‘Vinatang’, the longhouses measure 3 metres wide and 15 metres long, and consist of a long corridor where social gatherings take place and several family apartments or ‘Valai’ with its own sleeping, working and cooking areas. On average, a typical longhouse has 8-10 Valais. Larger longhouses have 15 or more. One of the best ways to get acquainted with the tribe’s culture and experience their lifestyles is through staying in the longhouse together with them.
