One of the few natural forests on the island, the Penang National Park (Taman Negara Pulau Pinang) is located at the North-Western side of the island, in Muka Head. Covering 1181 hectares of dipterocarp forest and 1381 hectares of wetlands, the park is an abundance of lush, natural beauty with a diverse ecosystem. The first protected area legally gazetted under the National Park Act of 1980, the park has over 500 flora and fauna species, as well as a meromictic lake (a lake with layers of water that do not inter-mix) at Pantai Keracut, mangrove swamps, mudflat areas, coral reefs and nesting areas for some endangered turtle species such as the Leatherback and the Hawksbill turtles. If you’re lucky, you can spot rare mammals such as slow loris, flying lemur, civet cats, leopard cats, sea otters and pangolins, especially around Pantai Keracut, as well as soaring exotic birds such as Crested Serpent eagles and Brahminy Kites.3 days

The Taman Negara in Penang Island is the world’s smallest national park which was formerly gazetted as Pantai Acheh Forest Reserve in 1928 and managed by the Penang Forestry Department. After that, the forest mentioned has been renamed as Penang National Park (Taman Negara Pulau Pinang) on 10 April 2003 under the management of Department of Wildlife and National Parks. The metropolitan national park which covers an area of 1,213 hectare may be tiny but it packs a punch of hosting a wealth of flora and fauna in its hilly coastal-forested area. In addition, the national park is also the only park which covers coast and forest in the world. The national park is gloriously beautiful at dusk, helping the park to be named as THE BAY OF GLOWING AMBER. The 250m long Canopy Walk, which is just newly built, hovers 15m from the ground to allow visitors to see the lush forest layers clearly from an interesting angle, so that visitors can understand how the natural rainforest’s conformation is. |

There is a Registration Office when you get in, that takes visitors’ names and also gives advice on the park. One of the special attractions of Pantai Kerachut is the Meromictic Lake where is visible for only six months of the year. The lake has 2 layers of water of different temperatures. The bottom layer of sea water is normally warmer than the surface fresh water. The beach is a popular campsite. Also, if you are observant, you will notice that many tress are with tagged with name tags along the way. You can also find the famous Eurycoma Longifolia as known as Tongkat Ali whichi is reputed to have aphrodiasiac qualities. Astonishingly, there is turtle hatchery at the far end of the beach. However, please do take care, not to disturb the turtle nesting grounds and do not light a fire. Let’s save the turtles! |
