The Rafflesia Trail

The Rafflesia is the world’s largest flower species with an incredible appearance and a pungent odour. This rare parasitic flower does not have stems, leaves, barks and roots of any kind, spending almost its entire life as a chain of cells inside a host vine. Once it blooms, the flower only lasts for five days before decaying.

This flower can reach up to 100 cm in diameter and produces a strong smell akin to a rotting carcass. While awful to the nostrils, this stench actually plays an important purpose in attracting insects such as carrion flies to help pollinate the plant. There are 20 known species of Rafflesia with 8 types found in Malaysia.

This tour will bring you on a journey to discover the world’s largest flower species in Ulu Geroh, Perak. After a 2-hour journey from Kuala Lumpur, you’ll be brought to an Aborigine (Orang Asli) village to visit an information center before embarking on a trek to the Rafflesia site. Along the way, the Orang Asli guides will point out to you the various flora that thrive in the tropical rainforest.

Once you reach the main site, you’ll be astounded at the beauty and size of this flower. As this flower is rare in the wild, expect to be very privileged to spot this amazing plant growing in their natural habitat in full bloom!

• 0900 hours: Pick up from hotel and depart for Gopeng.
• 1145 hours: ETA Gopeng and early lunch
• 1230 hours: Transfer to Orang Asli Village in Ulu Geroh
• 1300 hours: Visit to Information Center and Registration
• 1315 hours: Briefing and Trek to Rafflesia Site
• 1600 hours: Transfer out and tea
• 1700 hours: Return journey to Kuala Lumpur
• 1930 hours: ETA hotel.
