Lying on the southernmost tip of the Peninsula, Johor is best known as the gateway to Malaysia from Singapore. Some say Johor is short on tourist attractions but in reality, although it doesn’t compare to Malaysia’s other tourist-friendly states, Johor has plenty to keep visitors busy for at least a few hours. Known for its red-light scene, the state is also home to a number of large scale retail malls. Historic sites are in short supply but grandiose sights are ever present – noteworthy is the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque, the majestic Istana Besar (the Sultan’s former residence) and the State Secretariat Building, which dominates the town.
